The Publix Pharmacy will make the first of its kind, a 500-milligram tablet of Bactrim, available at no cost. The medication will be available in 100 tablets for $10.99, or $20.99 a month.
The Publix Pharmacy operates through a network of 24 pharmacy departments, each providing different prescription drugs and over-the-counter products.
The drug, which will cost $40.99 for a 90-day supply, is now available at $16.99 a month, making it a preferred choice for those who may be seeking a lower cost version of their antibiotic. The drug is also available as a generic prescription, at no cost for those who meet certain drug and pharmacy standards.
It's not available to purchase at all in the United States.
"It's a great product, and we really appreciate it," says Dr. Richard C. Leopold, a professor of pharmacology and clinical medicine at the University of Michigan College of Pharmacy. "But it's not as straightforward as one might think. It's not as effective as the first antibiotic."
The Publix Pharmacy will have one 500-milligram tablet of Bactrim, available for $13.99, with the first order at $12.99 a month, starting at $13.99.
Bactrim is an antibiotic commonly prescribed for urinary tract infections (UTIs), as well as certain types of respiratory tract infections, such as bronchitis and pneumonia, by doctors. In addition to UTIs, the antibiotic is also used in treating certain sexually transmitted infections and other conditions caused by bacteria.
While it's not prescribed to pregnant women or those with weakened immune systems, Bactrim is also used to prevent pneumonia caused by a bacteria called Clostridium difficile. It's thought to reduce the risk of bacterial infections that cause pneumonia.
The Publix Pharmacy does not sell prescription-only Bactrim products, so the pharmacy will only sell the first-dose version, which is sold by Publix and not by Healthmark.
However, if the Publix Pharmacy believes it is appropriate for a patient to continue taking the medication, it will not charge for the first-dose version.
Dr. Leopold says it's important to note that the Publix Pharmacy is the only pharmacy in the United States that does not allow for online ordering of prescription medicines, and to be sure that any prescription medication purchased over-the-counter will be appropriate for the patient.
The Publix Pharmacy is also not a "pharmacy" pharmacy, so it is not responsible for selling prescription products without the patient's permission.
The Publix Pharmacy is the only company that will sell prescription-only Bactrim products.
"It is completely illegal, as is the case with all other non-prescription products," says Leopold.
The Publix Pharmacy has not been sued, but will face up to $1.3 billion in litigation if it wins the patent on the drug. The litigation is expected to run out in the first few months of 2017.
While the drug is not currently available to purchase at the pharmacy, the Publix Pharmacy's new antibiotic is a first-to-market option.
